55: Financial Self Care with Taylor Broughton

Taylor is an American psychotherapist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She runs an online private practice in the UK called Just Human Therapy, where she works to make therapy a normal part of taking care of ourselves so we can learn to live more intentionally. She shares how she filled up her practice quickly, how she used something a lot of new therapists get hung up on (being young) to her advantage, and making social media work for her.

Three Takeaways from Taylor

  1. Have a Financial Role Model

For Taylor, seeing a private pay model work when she was at a private pay practice helped buoy her confidence that she could also have a private pay practice. Therapist or not, seeing someone else do the things you are interested in doing financially can offer “proof” that it is possible.

  2. Using social media as a support system

Taylor cited following several therapists (two of which have been on the podcast! Marie Fang of Private practice Skills and Josie Rosario of the Healing Strategy) on social media as a way to get help for both money mindset and strategy. How can you curate your social media feed to provide you with information and inspiration instead of comparison-itis?

  3. Standing in her truth and what works for her.

Taylor shared that acknowledging other therapists set up their practices differently without feeling like she had to do the exact same. She turned inward to trust that she knows what she needs energetically and financially to work in her practice. In your life, how can you omit any judgement for how others manage their money and focus on what works for you?

Financial Self-Care for Therapists

Therapists have internalized so many stories about making--or not making--money, that they often don’t know where to start when it comes to ensuring their private practices can support their financial self-care. If you are a private practice therapist, imagine what the world would be like if you didn’t have to sweat when you took time off, you could say yes to aligned clients with ease, and you had others with who you could talk money with. If that sounds good to you, I’d invite you to learn more about my group coaching program Grow a Profitable Practice From the Inside Out! In the program, you’ll learn how to rewrite your unhelpful money stories, create a sustainable fee tailor-made to you, and understand the foundations of marketing to keep your practice full of aligned clients.
