30: Carving Your Own Path with Allyssa Dziurlaj

Allyssa Dziurlaj is a psychotherapist in Akron, Ohio who joins the Mind Money Balance podcast to talk about overcoming the messages she internalized about money management, her interest in personal finance, and carving out her path in private practice by not following the traditional post-graduate route so many other therapists take.

Today's guest is Allyssa Dziurlaj. She is a psychotherapist in Akron, Ohio. You know that well-worn path to private practice for therapists? It usually looks like, graduate, take a low-paying internship, work somewhere for 5-8 years, then try your hand at private practice (no, just be?). She instead went straight into private practice, knowing that was her goal when she had an a-ha moment during one of her classes. Also in the episode, she talks about overcoming the messages she internalized about money management and her interest in personal finance (she’s currently learning more about the FIRE movement).

Three takeaways from today's episode with Allyssa are below.

  1. Money relationships evolve and are ongoing. Where we are now with money is not indicative of where we will go. Take what serves from various financial literacy practices, and release those that don't.

  2. Diversify where you get your personal finance and financial therapy information! There are so many different ways to get information; make sure you diversify your journey. Some of my favorites are Bola Sokunbi, Berna Anat (fellow Filipina!), and Erin Lowry.

  3. Building our relationship with money in aligned ways. In Allyssa's private practice, she says "no" to clients who aren't aligned. When it comes to your personal relationship with money, take stock if you are spending, saving, and investing in alignment with your values.

Allyssa Dziurlaj LPC is a therapist in private practice in Akron, Ohio. She loves all things business, marketing and money-related. This inspired her to start her Instagram page @creativepracticebuilding where she documents her own journey starting her solo practice. Allyssa is a fellow enneagram 8, an avid lover of Beyonce and a personal finance nerd. You can find more information about Allyssa’s practice at www.crookedrivercounselingservices.com.
