Financial Therapy for Individuals

You feel overwhelmed, annoyed, and frankly, somewhat embarrassed about what your relationship with money is like.

You thought once you were earning enough, things would be easier.

Even more frustrating?

It’s not all one thing!

Sometimes, you feel like you are saving too much and not enjoying life. Other times, it feels like a game of whack-a-mole trying to navigate all of life’s expenses.

What if you could understand your relationship with money, so you could use it in a way that feels best for you?

Traditional personal finance is full of stuffy rules that only work for a very small subset of people (cough cough).

In financial therapy, we’ll explore how your early money messages shaped you, what personal finance guidelines matter to you, and help you create a relationship with money that affords you the ability to practice radical self-care. Throughout it all, we’ll be checking in on your mental health, and ensuring you’ve got the coping skills you need to take care of yourself.

How Financial Therapy Works

During the first few sessions together, we gather information about your financial past to see what’s impacting your current financial reality. We’ll set goals and check in periodically to ensure we’re moving in the right direction. Financial therapy works best when we focus on 1-3 specific areas that your relationship with money is impacting. Financial therapy is typically shorter term than traditional, open-ended psychotherapy, with most clients working with me weekly for 5-8 months. Our work together concludes when you feel you’ve achieved your goals and have mastered new coping skills to help you when financial hiccups arise.

Financial Therapy Fees

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Think of working with me as you would use a roadmap; I'll offer suggestions and directions, but it’s ultimately up to you which path you take to reach your destination. It helps to be vulnerable, willing to practice new behaviors and to take ownership of your emotional-financial relationship. I strongly recommend spending one hour per week with your money. That can look like reviewing your bank statements, checking where your money went for the week, or counting the change in your piggy bank.

  • I’m licensed to provide therapy in Michigan, I can only see individuals who live in the State, even though it’s via video.

If you live outside of Michigan, coaching may be a good fit for you.

  • My practice is fee-for-service meaning you pay for services then seek reimbursement from your insurance provider for out-of-network services. My hourly rates are $215/hour and the initial assessment is $275.

  • Prior to specializing in financial therapy, I helped clients with anxiety. As a biracial woman with culturally sensitive training and lived experience, I’m able to help folks navigate the nuances of being a biracial or multicultural person. I occasionally have space to work with clients around these issues, please inquire via email to see if I have space lindsay@mindmoneybalance.com
